What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defence art developed in Brazil in the 1920s. The goal of competitive BJJ is victory by submission using joint locks or chokeholds, or winning by points.
BJJ was developed by the Gracie family from traditional Japanese jujutsu and judo, but with a greater emphasis on ground fighting. BJJ can be practised for self-defence, for personal fitness and as a competitive sport.
It was the Gracie family who set up the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993, and BJJ fighters dominated the sport at first. The joint locks and chokeholds from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu remain highly effective in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions.
